Short answer: pick an SEO company that understands businesses like yours, explains exactly what it will do each month, reports your rankings across the area you serve, leaves your website, domain and Google profile in your name, and doesn't lock you into a long contract. Walk away from anyone who guarantees #1, won't say what they'll actually do, or wants to own your accounts.
Searching "SEO agency near me" or "SEO agency in the USA" gives you a long list of companies that all claim to get results. For a small business, the right one isn't the biggest or the closest. It's the one that does real work every month and shows you the proof.
Does the agency need to be near you?
No. SEO is done online: your Google profile, your website, reviews and listings. An agency in another state can do it as well as one down the road, as long as it understands your market. What matters more is whether it has worked with local businesses, and whether it checks your rankings from inside your service area rather than from its own office.
10 questions to ask before you hire
- "What exactly will you do each month?" You want a specific list: profile updates, review requests, pages written, fixes made. "Optimization" on its own is not an answer.
- "How will you report results?" Look for rankings checked across your area, plus calls, bookings and website clicks, every month.
- "Who owns my website, domain and Google profile?" The answer should be you. If the agency registers your domain or owns your profile, leaving means losing them.
- "How long is the contract?" A short start period followed by month-to-month is fair. Twelve-month lock-ins with big cancellation fees are a warning sign.
- "Have you worked with businesses like mine?" Ask what they changed and what happened, and ask to see an example report.
- "How do you get reviews?" The only right answer is asking real customers. Buying reviews or filtering out unhappy customers breaks Google's rules, and the FTC's fake review rule, in effect since October 2024, allows fines.
- "What category would you choose for my Google profile, and why?" A good agency checks what the top-ranked businesses near you use. The primary category was the #1 map factor in Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey.
- "Will you write pages for my services and areas?" A dedicated page for each service and content about the areas you serve were the top two factors for regular local results in the same survey.
- "What do you need from me?" Expect a short list: manager access to your profile, photos, and answers to a few questions about your business.
- "What happens if it isn't working after three months?" Listen for a plan to change course, not excuses.
Red flags
- "We guarantee #1 on Google." Nobody controls Google's rankings, and distance from the searcher is a factor nobody can change.
- Secret methods. Real SEO isn't secret. If they won't explain what they do, assume it's little or risky.
- Fake addresses or keyword-stuffed business names. They can get your Google profile suspended.
- Thousands of backlinks for a small fee. Cheap bulk links are usually worthless or harmful.
- Reports full of numbers that don't connect to customers. "Impressions" alone don't pay the bills.
- They own your accounts. Your domain, website and Google profile should always be in your name.
What a fair deal looks like
| Fair | Watch out | |
|---|---|---|
| Contract | Short start, then month-to-month | 12+ months with cancellation fees |
| Ownership | Domain, site and profile in your name | Agency owns or "rents" them to you |
| Work | A specific monthly list | "Ongoing optimization" |
| Reporting | Rankings across your area, calls, reviews | Vague traffic charts |
| Promises | The work, done every month | Guaranteed rankings |
